Use the Gold Leaf
and Experience the Craftsmanship

HAKUICHI offers the gold-leafing experiences at two of our stores, “Main Store HAKUKOKAN” and “Kanazawa Bikazari Asano” throughout the year.
At “Main Store HAKUKOKAN”, we offer many programs including various levels of metal-leafing experience from beginners to advanced visitors and the gold-leaf transfer experience to feel how thin gold leaves are. We can accommodate one from person to a group of 70 so that a private visitor as well as group travelers can enjoy the experiential programs. At “Kanazawa Bikazari Asano”, we focus on simple programs.
 
 

Gold-leafing Experience

We offer a wide array of metal-leafing experiences to make your own craftworks to meet different travel schedules and budgets. We also offer some seasonal metal-leafing programs, so please inquire for details. As our staffs will give you the thorough guidance, even small children and beginners can have a great time.

Steps of Metal-leafing Experience “Master Course”

Decide which item to work on, and choose the pattern stickers. Different items require different number of stickers.
Decide on where to apply the gold leaf, and place the stickers. The instructor will then apply the adhesive.
Apply gold leaf over the glued surface. The instructor will show you how to maneuver your fingers to entirely cover the pattern with gold leaf.
Coat the surface with the top coat, wait to dry and carefully remove the pattern stickers.
Now, you have a great souvenir to remember your trip to Kanazawa. This is the only craft in the world with your original design. Very useful when you bring back home.

The programs at “Kanazawa Bikazari Asano” are for reservation only. Please make a reservation at “Main Store HAKUKOKAN”.
Groups of 10 or more are requested to reserve earlier.
The duration is a rough indication for group visitors. Please check with our staff upon reservation.
”Main Store” HAKUKOKAN >> Up to 70 people can take a program together. For groups of over 70, please inquire.
 
 

Gold Leaf Transfer

You can experience the gold leaf transfer nowhere but HAKUICHI. The sense of accomplishment you feel when you successfully handle the thin gold leaf that can fly away with the weakest of breath with the time-proven tools is beyond words. You sure will have fun even if you fail. As this program requires only a short time, even busy travelers can experience how the masterly craftsman works.

Steps of Gold-leaf Transfer Experience

You can use the same tools as professional craftsmen. We will give you full guidance as they are very delicate.
Lift the gold leaf with bamboo tweezers, very gently place over the leather-covered woodblock and spread smoothly.
Delicately blow to smooth out so that ripples spread outwardly.
Trim the gold leaf with the bamboo frame. Move carefully as the gold leaf can easily fly away.
Place the gold leaf over the grass paper, and you are all set. Please bring the gold leaf home.
